“Give me a head with hair, long beautiful hair. . . or maybe, it’s time for a haircut:" Advice for Hair Salons and other similar services.

There is no question that the Coronavirus has disrupted the beauty industry, as hair and nail salons, and spas have been prevented from providing any services to their customers. That fact is made clear by the bankruptcy filing of Hair Cuttery, Bubbles and Salon Cielo which have all recently filed for bankruptcy. While beauty businesses are suffering, it is important to find ways to stabilize your business. Below are things that a hair salon owner should consider to avoid suffering the same fate as those companies:

Revise Your Business Plan

It is imperative for you to go back and revisit your business plan and assess how you operate. In revising your business plan you should consider the fact that your salon cannot accommodate as many customers as it historically did and that there are extra safety precautions that will need to be taken to protect your employees from infection, which will increase the amount of time per appointment.  In addition, assessing the amount of time that it takes to provide services will permit you to provide your customers with transparency as it relates to scheduling appointments.

Be Prepared for a Temporary Increase in Business

During the past month and a half, people have been unable to purchase traditional beauty services, such as a manicure or haircut. However online purchases of beauty products has increased significantly. As a result, there will likely be a large influx of customers and potential customers who are interested in getting a hair cut after the Coronavirus closures are over, and if the customers cannot be timely serviced by you, they will go somewhere else. As a result you should make sure that you have are prepared to meet these needs by, among other conduct, opening your business for extended hours, implementing an online scheduling system, and providing clients and others with real time updates as to availability.

Contact Interested Parties

The Coronavirus closures have been harmful to distributors of beauty products because they haven’t been able to sell product directly to you and your customers. As a result, it is important to reach out to your distributors to make sure that they can still meet your demands. In addition, beauty product distributors are offering special promotions which may also help you reduce overhead. You should also reach out to your landlord and lender and discuss your situation with them as soon as possible.
